Wait, who wants the SVT on a WRX? I am going to get my finger nail puller.

My parents won't let me learn how to drive a manual until I'm out of college, so until then, I'm just happy that the WRX has a CVT and the Golf R has a DSG now :D

Then buy a Camry... :( So sad to see a WRX with a CVT. Actually, I guess the Golf is OK.
And you get a new car as a high school student? Geez, now I really hate your parents.

Thanks for this dribble of ignorance. A CVT WRX would smoke well north of 90% of cars on the road, so what's the problem here?
Seriously, a Camry? Don't be a dick. Actually drive a performance CVT, and then make your own opinion about it. Don't assume because the shitbox you rented/owned/borrowed one time with CVT is how all CVTs are.

Don't let the haters get you down about CVTs. In a performance context they're great, it's just most people's experience with them is limited to econoboxes.

I never said anything about performance, its the complete lack of soul! And yes, if you are going to ruin a WRX buy a camry, or the Golf is OK.

You're the one who's a dick here. You should know Oppositelock is about the feeling of driving, not just the numbers.

I also never said anything about performance. I said you should drive a performance CVT. CVT's can be great or really suck, depending on their software. I've not been in the new WRX but a few cars with over 250 bhp and a CVT, and they really don't suck, especially when they have paddle shifters.
I'm sure you'll sneer at that too, but the way a CVT is set up, paddle shifters actually let you control your engines RPMs very well and smoothly transition from ratio to ration with no loss of power.
It's all a question of software, and I'm sure the WRX engineers didn't worry too much about MPG when setting up the CVT on this car. Non-econo CVTs can be delightful, most people just don't know it yet.

There is SO much more to how a car feels and the fun you can have in it than getting to shift your own gears. That's just silly.
I feel like someone putting don't another oppo's prospective ride is more dickish. Sorry, not sorry.

I feel like saying "Thanks for this dribble of ignorance" is a pretty dickish thing to do. I would have been much more polite if you had been

Saying a WRX CVT = Camry is a flatly ignorant statement, and when you're saying it about someone's prospective ride, it's just mean-spirited. I replied in kind, sue me.

I will admit, happily at that that some cars a CVT or paddle shifters (Or both) makes sense. High end supercars for example where the time most people take to shift is greater than the difference in laptimes in a race for that class of cars.
But when you are talking about a DD with <300hp you are going to lose so much of the feeling and spirit of the car.
Is it a bit dickish to compare a CVT WRX with a Camry? Probably, but the WRX is such a niche car that I hate to see one sold without part of what has been the spirit of the car for so long, it really might as well be a Camry IMO. I will make exceptions however, such as someone who physically can't row their own. And for those people I am glad car companies are doing this. What bothers me though is that 90% of the WRXs sold with a CVT are going to be not to those who can't drive stick, but to those who won't. People who lack the commitment to driving to learn.
" CVT WRX would smoke well north of 90% of cars on the road" Sounds like you were talking about performance to me.

Performance certainly enhances a driving experience, does it not though? You aren't going to feel that much out of the gear box of a 458, but I'm not sure it's something most people would complain about, considering the whole picture. I've driven a Camry for 2 weeks the length of the Pacific Coast Highway, and I'm telling you, if you consider THE WHOLE picture, and not just the transmission, the WRX is going to give you a better driving experience. Like SO MUCH BETTER.
There are a lot of reasons why a stick driver would go with the CVT. Perhaps they have a non-shifting spouse. Maybe they just had a kid and really need that free hand right now in their life. Perhaps their 6'7" and it's just not feasible for them to shift in a cramped car. These are all concerns I have at the moment. Giving an enthusiast with these limitations access to an otherwise fantastic car is awesome of Subaru, IMO.
I'd probably still go stick, but that's cause I'm 31 and I can make my own damn decisions. Just because this kid can't get this one feature, doesn't mean he's not still making a great oppo-approved (heck gearhead of most ilks-approved) choice of the WRX.

I spent a few weeks in a Camry too, and every minute was dreadful!
And you are 100% right. And I have kids + a manual and it isn't an issue. The wife can't drive my car, which is good because... lets just say she accidents too often for me to let her drive my car.
From an emotional standpoint though, I hate the thought of a CVT WRX.
